BACKGROUNDER

THE CRANIAL CASH CLASH
Canada’s First-Ever Interactive Financial Literacy Assessment Game

"The Cranial Cash Clash is designed to help people self-assess their personal financial situations by prompting them to test their true understanding of all things money."

– Tom Hamza
President, Investor Education Fund (IEF)

The Cranial Cash Clash is a new financial literacy game presented by Investor Education Fund’s (IEF) GetSmarterAboutMoney.ca – Canada’s most comprehensive financial literacy and financial education website.

The extensive online and mobile game is released for Apple iOS, Google Android and available on GetSmarterAboutMoney.ca to help Canadians assess how much they really know and need to learn about money. The fun and educational trivia game tests players’ knowledge on a wide range of financial topics or “episodes” such as:

  1. Debt drama: the longer you owe, the more you pay. Can you deal with debt?
  2. Quest to invest: how well do you know the basics of investing?
  3. Scam exam: can you separate financial fact from fraud?
  4. Saving for school: do you know the in’s and out’s of saving for a child’s education?
  5. Investment shopping: smart investors shop around. How well do you know your investments?
  6. Concise advice: how do you find the money advice you need when you need it?
  7. Unsure? Insure: protect your loved ones – plan ahead.
  8. Ready, set, retire: it’s your future. Are you ready for retirement?

From spending, saving, investing, debt, financial fraud, financial planning, registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs) and retirement planning, players compete to score cranial points, which IEF believes will challenge Canadians to raise their scores – and improve their financial knowledge.

One of the features of the game includes assistance for money-challenged players, such as “brain boosters”, which are helpful hints that offer the player a guiding hand when needed. Players can also “clash” with their friends and family and see how they rank against them and the global community. A benefit of the game is that each answer is explained and tips are bountiful. All questions are continuously refreshed, so that the game can be played multiple times and the questions will be new each time.

When all questions are answered, players receive a final score and one of three awards (gold, silver or bronze) based on the number of correct answers, time and total lifelines used. Based on their results, players are provided with relevant resources they can use to improve their scores and their overall financial knowledge.
