How to bank, invest, and pay bills online

You can set up online banking and investing with any major bank or financial institution in Canada. You must already have an account, as well as a computer with an Internet connection. Here's how:

How do I set up an online account?

1. Go to the website of the financial institution where you want to do your online banking, and follow the instructions.

2. You will get your own access number and create a password that allows you to get into your account. You may have to call your financial institution to get the account set up or to get your password.

3. You may also have to call to make sure that you can access all of your accounts, loans, and investment information.

How do I pay bills online?

Paying bills online saves you money on postage because you don’t mail your payments. Also, it’s quick and easy, so you may be more likely to pay bills on time. Your bank may charge fees for this service.

To get started, follow these steps:

1. Enter your access code and password to get to your account online.

2. Follow the instructions on your bank’s website. The bank will ask you for the customer account information for each company you want to pay. You should be able to find this information on the paper bill you received. You only have to enter it once. After that, you only need to know the company name and the dollar amount needed to pay your bills.

Tip: You can also go into your bank branch and ask the teller to set up a bill payment for you.

3. Once you’ve paid the bill, print a record of the payment and keep it in a file. It will likely take a few days to process your online payment. The money will be taken from your account right away, but the company you’re paying may not get it for two to three days.
